WordPress Basics: How to Log In and Add or Edit a Post or Page

Here are answers to three basic questions I get from clients who are new to WordPress:

How do I access my WordPress admin area?

To access your admin area, go to yoursite.com/wp-admin. The page will look like this (without the yellow arrows which I’ve added to show you where to either click or enter information):

To log in, enter your username and password and click “Log In.”

How do I add or edit a blog post?

Before answering this, it’s helpful to distinguish between pages and posts in WordPress. Most simply, pages are used for static content and posts are used for blog content.

When you log in, you’ll arrive at your WordPress Dashboard. To add or edit a blog post, click “Posts” in the left menu.

 main menu

This will take you to the Posts area, which lists your existing blog posts. To edit a post, either click on its title, or hover over its title and click “Edit” when it appears.

To add a new post, click “Add New.”

On the resulting page, enter your title and content (or you can edit them if it’s an existing blog post).  You can either type them in or copy and paste them from the source document if you already written them somewhere else.  Click “Add Media” to add an image, video or audio clip.

Click “Preview” in the top right section to view your post without publishing it. To save it without publishing it, click “Save Draft.”  Once done, click “Publish” to make the blog post available to all.

You can also create and select categories for your posts (a feature which enables you to group related posts) and choose an image to display at the top of your post by clicking “Set featured image.”

How do I add or edit a page?

Adding or editing a page is similar to adding or editing a post. To start, click “Pages” in the menu on the left.

This will take you to the Pages area, which lists your existing pages. To edit a page, either click on its title, or hover over its title and click “Edit” when it appears.

To add a new page, click “Add New.”

Click “Preview” in the top right section to view your page without publishing it. To save it without publishing it, click “Save Draft.”  Once done, click “Publish” to make the page available to all.

Unlike posts, pages can’t be categorized. You can, however, create a hierarchy by making one the parent of another.

Choose an image to display at the top of your page by clicking “Set featured image.”

I hope this helps you get started.  There’s quite a bit of functionality I haven’t covered and the images here may differ from yours for a variety of reasons.  WordPress 3.9.2 is the current version as of publication.
